How to create and edit Plumbit menus

Before you begin#

• Keep Plumbit active and use an administrator account or another role with menu-management permission.
• Publish the pages, Services, products, categories, or other content you want to add.
• Record which menu is currently assigned before replacing a public navigation menu.
• Use a backup or staging copy before making a substantial navigation change.

Open the menu editor#

In the Plumbit WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Menus. The screen has Edit Menus and Manage Locations tabs. Edit Menus is where you create the link collection; Manage Locations is where you decide where it appears.

On the current screen, choose an existing menu from Select a menu to edit, or choose the create-menu link. The available menu names are site data, not required Plumbit names. Do not assume that a menu called Main Menu is assigned to the Main Menu location.

Create a new menu#

1. Start the create workflow#

   Open Appearance > Menus and choose the option to create a new menu.

2. Enter a descriptive Menu Name#

   Use a name that explains its purpose, such as Main Navigation, Mobile Navigation, or Footer Navigation. These examples are labels for your site, not required Plumbit names.

3. Create the menu#

   Choose Create Menu. The new menu can then receive items and a location assignment.

4. Add and organize items#

   Add the links described below, arrange them, and save the menu before testing it.

Add pages, posts, and Plumbit content#

The Add menu items screen exposes panels for Pages, Posts, the product panel, Services, the project panel, Team Members, and several taxonomy panels. It also exposes Custom Links, Categories, and WooCommerce panels. If a panel is not visible, open Screen Options and check whether it is available for this installation.

1. Select the content panel#

   Choose the Pages, Services, product, project, or other panel that contains the published item.

2. Choose the item#

   Select the published records to add. A post type being public does not by itself guarantee that a panel is visible; the current menu screen is the authority.

3. Add it to the menu#

   Use Add to Menu, then review the new item in Menu structure.

For Services, keep Plumbit Extensions active and confirm the Service is published. If Services are missing, use Service troubleshooting before changing code or menu assignments.

Add a custom link#

Open Custom Links, enter the destination in URL, enter the visible label in Link Text, and choose Add to Menu. Use a complete https:// URL for an external destination. Use a # URL only when you intentionally need a non-destination parent item and have tested keyboard and touch behavior.

Create and reorder submenu items#

In Menu structure, drag an item slightly to the right beneath its intended parent until WordPress shows the submenu indentation. This creates a dropdown relationship. Drag items up or down to change their order, then choose Save Menu. A parent item may remain clickable; test both the parent and its submenu links on desktop and mobile.

Plumbit adds its own menu rendering and mobile submenu toggle behavior, so test the saved hierarchy in the public header rather than relying only on the editor indentation.

Edit or remove an item#

Expand an item with its arrow to review the fields available on this installation. Common WordPress fields include Navigation Label, Title Attribute, Open link in a new tab, CSS Classes, Link Relationship (XFN), and Description. Screen Options can reveal additional fields. Changing Navigation Label changes the menu text only; it does not rename the linked page or Service.

Use Remove when a link should no longer be in the menu. Removing a menu item does not delete the linked page, Service, product, category, or custom URL.

Save and verify#

1. Save Menu#

   Choose Save Menu after adding, reordering, editing, or removing items.

2. Assign it separately#

   Open Manage Locations when the menu should control a header area.

3. Test the public site#

   Check the desktop menu, sticky header when enabled, mobile menu, submenu links, external links, and a logged-out view.

Expected result#

The menu contains the intended links and hierarchy, has been saved, and is ready to be assigned to a Plumbit menu location.
